Chris Coombs' journey in government and politics began at the Hinckley Institute, where he immersed himself in a variety of impactful experiences that shaped his career. A 2017 graduate of the University of Utah with a double major in History and Political Science, Chris credits the Hinckley Institute with sparking his passion for public service and opening doors to career-defining opportunities.

During his undergraduate years, Coombs took full advantage of the Hinckley Institute’s offerings. He participated in multiple internships, including with U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch, the Utah Attorney General’s Office, the Utah State Legislature, and the law and lobbying firm Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck.

Although each of these experiences was unique in its own way, they all taught me about the diversity of the public sector. I had a front-row seat to how government functions at both the state and federal levels, including the dynamics of political campaigns.

Beyond internships, Coombs engaged in the Hinckley community as an Editorial Board Member for the Hinckley Journal and Student Ambassador. He also represented the Hinckley Institute at conferences such as the Utah Intercollegiate Legislature and the Andrew Goodman Foundation.

One of his standout memories from his time at the Hinckley was participating in the 2016 general election debate between Congressman Chris Stewart and his opponent, where he had the opportunity to ask them a question live on TV. He also fondly remembers his internship with the Utah State Legislature, where he not only gained firsthand policy experience but was invited back the following year to serve as staff.

I loved learning about the wide range of issues, meeting the key stakeholders, and working in a fast-paced environment where real change happened quickly and effectively.

Coombs’ experiences at the Hinckley laid the groundwork for his impressive career in government and political consulting. Since graduation, he has worked in various political and campaign roles, including as Executive Director for multiple political action committees. Today, he continues to make an impact as a leader at Election Hive, a campaign management and political consulting firm.

My interest in government and politics without a doubt began with the Hinckley Institute. I especially credit the internship experiences for fostering a deeper desire to learn more and opening doors to opportunities I hadn’t anticipated.

As he progresses in his career, Chris continues to build on the foundation established at the Hinckley Institute.
