About the Institute

Olene S. Walker was Utah 's fifteenth governor from 2003 to 2005, the first woman to hold the office. She made significant contributions in the areas of education, literacy, housing, and tax policy during her tenure as governor. Born on November 15, 1930 in Ogden , Utah , she married Myron Walker in 1954 and had seven children. Ms. Walker received undergraduate, masters, and doctoral degrees from Brigham Young University , Stanford University , and the University of Utah , respectively. She served as a member of the Utah State House of Representatives, where she became majority whip, and as Utah 's first female Lieutenant Governor.

The Olene S. Walker Scholarship was established to encourage female undergraduate students to follow Governor Walker's example of excellent public service.

RequirementS
A generous donation by Zions Bank funds an annual scholarship for one outstanding female undergraduate student at the University of Utah. A student may receive this scholarship for full tuition and fees by meeting the following criteria:

  • Strong academic standing in any academic major at the University of Utah (minimum 3.3 GPA)
  • Full-time student who will maintain full-time student status throughout the 2009-2010 school year.
  • Demonstrate ongoing commitment to active citizenship and public service.

Note: Students may apply only once for this scholarship
